Ask the Nutrition Expert: How Do We Make Dietary Recommendations Relevant to Consumers?

The launch of a new year brings with it well-intentioned goals for improved health, including exercising more and eating better. Among the onslaught of fads and trends, health and wellness professionals try to guide patients, clients, friends and family based on sound science and evidence, while also keeping recommendations fresh and relevant.

Most health and wellness professionals respect the recommendations from The Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) because of its evidence-based process that ensures the latest research is considered when it comes to the public’s eating choices. For dairy, the DGA recommends three daily servings of low-fat or fat-free dairy foods in those 9 years of age and older.

Many trusted health and wellness organizations have just signed a statement in support of the role of three daily servings of low-fat and fat-free dairy foods in building healthy and nutritious eating patterns as outlined by the DGA. The list includes The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics;  Feeding America; School Nutrition Association; Food Research and Action Center (FRAC); the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition; National Hispanic Medical Association; and Action for Healthy Kids.

As this infographic shows, three servings of milk provide a mixture of essential nutrients that can be hard to achieve from other sources. It’s clear that milk and dairy foods are an important component of the diet and support health. So, how do we keep recommendations for dairy fresh and relevant?

The recent inaugural article kicking off this column, written by National Dairy Council (NDC) President Jean Ragalie-Carr, RDN, LDN, FAND, shares some easy and creative ways to include dairy in your daily eating plan.

Additionally, one of my go-to resources for recipes that I can count on my family enjoying is Ellie Krieger, who is a registered dietitian nutritionist, cooking show host, cookbook author and columnist for The Washington Post. In this blog post, Ellie shares how fun it can be to explore yogurt flavors and touts their health benefits.

Another fabulous resource is the always creative Toby Amidor, who is also a registered dietitian nutritionist and one of the best at giving advice about meal preparation for busy people. In this blog post Toby shares five great meal prep tips with recipes. I’m a big fan of her honey ricotta with strawberries recipe!
