Out of milk? 4 ways to remember when to buy more

No matter if you just poured cereal into a bowl or are smack in the middle of a recipe, it’s never a fun time to realize that you’re out of milk or other ingredients.

Here are four ideas that may save you from going through that discouraging discovery again.

  • Tackle this problem with an old school solution and keep a pad of paper next to your fridge. As you get close to running out of something, write it down. That way, you can make sure you get to the store before you completely run out. If you prefer, you can keep this list on your phone, too.
  • In addition, it can help to keep running lists of foods you regularly purchase. For example, if there are always pantry items you like to have on hand or fresh foods you always like to have stocked in the fridge, make lists for each and keep one on your fridge and the other in your pantry or cabinet. That way, you can always crosscheck the list with the items you have at home before heading to the store.
  • Download an app for your smartphone. As you’d expect, there are plenty of apps out there to download, from to-do list apps like Remember the Milk to grocery-specific apps that may feature anything and everything from a barcode scanner, list sharing, integrated coupons, push notifications, and more.
  • Depending on your type of smartphone, you may not even need to download app. For example, in the iPhone’s Reminders app, you can create a grocery list and set up notifications to alert you to them when you walk in the store.
