U.S. Dairy Stewardship Commitment

Open, transparent and science-based

The U.S. dairy industry is committed to an open, transparent and science-based approach to measuring and communicating our sustainability progress across the dairy value chain, from grass to glass.

The U.S. Dairy Stewardship Commitment

The Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy recognizes that now, more than ever, the dairy community must be open, proactive and proud in telling our stories of continuous improvement.  The U.S. Dairy Stewardship Commitment (Commitment) demonstrates dairy’s longstanding values through a transparent, multi-stakeholder, and pre-competitive process, and defines indicators (what is measured) and metrics (how they are measured) that empower the dairy community to holistically document progress (metrics and indicators available here).  Through the Dairy Sustainability Alliance®, a national initiative for stakeholder engagement, the Commitment allows customers, nonprofits, scientific experts, and other key influencers to work directly with farmers, cooperatives, and processors on continuous improvement and reporting that provides both credibility and value to the U.S. industry and endorsement and support in the global marketplace.

Stakeholder consultation period open for stewardship indicators and metrics

As part of a regular review, we seek to enhance the Commitment’s relevancy and value.  Five industry-led committees of sustainability experts are developing revisions and additions to the Commitment metrics (an evolution of the Innovation Center’s Stewardship and Sustainability Framework).  In the current revision cycle, three metric additions and two revisions are proposed.  To ensure the credibility and value of these proposed metrics, input and expertise from both the dairy community and engaged third parties is essential.  To obtain this input, a stakeholder comment period for the proposed stewardship metrics will take place from May 14 – July 20.  The comment period allows the dairy industry and key stakeholders to review and comment on the proposed indicators and metrics before final approval and incorporation in the Stewardship Commitment.

After completion of the comment period, the Innovation Center will review feedback and consider updates to the stewardship metrics before releasing the Commitment in the fall.

Stewardship and Sustainability Framework for U.S. Dairy

The Stewardship and Sustainability Framework for U.S. Dairy (Framework) supports dairy farms and companies' efforts to voluntarily measure, report, and communicate progress. In February 2018, the Framework evolved to the U.S. Dairy Stewardship Commitment as a broader affirmation and demonstration of U.S. dairy's longstanding values of responsible production, nourishing communities, and continuous improvement. Framework metrics are renamed the Stewardship Commitment Metrics and will be a key component of the U.S. Dairy Stewardship Commitment document due for release in late Fall.

The Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy® published its sixth progress report to update stakeholders on the status of our Sustainability Commitment.

Through this shared commitment, the U.S. dairy industry works together pre-competitively to provide consumers with the nutritious dairy products they want, in a way that makes the industry, people and planet economically, environmentally and socially better.
