2013-2014 New Product Competition
Offers Students $16,000 in Awards
Sponsored by the Dairy Research Institute® (DRI)
The Dairy Research Institute® is on the cutting edge of product development, driving innovation and demand for dairy products and ingredients. As part of that mission, our third annual New Product Competition is challenging student teams to develop a new dairy product, including any food or beverage item for any occasion, for the baby boomer population.
Baby boomers, born between 1946 and 1964, continue to influence U.S. demographics. Adults ages 55 and over are predicted to represent approximately one-third of the total U.S. population by 2020.1
As research from the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy shows, Americans are redefining aging. Today’s baby boomers have:
- Adopted a more health-conscious lifestyle to reduce the risk of chronic diseases associated with aging
- Increased motivation to maintain an active lifestyle complete with travel, hobbies and exercise
- Increased concern for longevity and goals of independence
As a result of these changing views of aging, diets high in protein that help build strong bones and preserve lean muscle mass have gained importance. As many as 13 percent of 60 to 70-year olds and 50 percent of adults over age 80 may experience a loss of muscle mass and strength. Diets high in protein, such as those that include dairy (e.g., milk, cheese, yogurt or dairy ingredients like whey), can help maintain muscle mass.
The dairy industry has a significant opportunity to help meet the nutritional needs of this sizeable demographic.
That’s why the Dairy Research Institute, established by America’s dairy farmers, is providing a platform for students to use their knowledge and expertise to create new products for healthy aging that leverage the market insights provided by Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy in “Opportunity for Aging Adults and Dairy.”
This is your chance to help advance the dairy industry. The New Product Competition will recognize three outstanding student teams that create new dairy-based products to meet baby boomers’ needs with a good tasting, healthy and affordable product.
