Darigold, Inc.: 2012 U.S. Dairy Export Council Award for Outstanding Dairy Processing & Manufacturing Sustainability

A systematic approach to achieving company-wide results

After evaluating its sustainability performance in 2008, Seattle-based Darigold committed to implementing both operational and innovative approaches that would allow the company to effectively address global sustainability challenges. Today, sustainability touches nearly every aspect of the Darigold enterprise and is central to how it does business, an element of pride for Darigold’s membership, board of directors and employees.

Of key importance to Darigold are such things as improving safety performance, energy conservation, water use and waste reduction. Darigold’s most recent work includes 28 performance areas in which the company has measured and set goals for improvement. By focusing on these key performance areas, Darigold has been able to improve water use by more than 13 percent. They recycle 50 percent of their waste, and achieved a nearly 50 percent reduction in fuel usage per unit, equal to more than 216,000 gallons of diesel fuel annually. They have completed more than 20 sustainability-driven packaging redesigns, reducing cost by over $1 million and greatly reducing corrugated and plastic usage.

Companywide engagement is crucial to Darigold’s successes, along with growing an understanding of the complete sustainability journey. “Striving to become better is part of the Darigold culture,” says Jim Wegner, president and CEO.
