A voluntary framework for tracking and communicating progress
The Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy is developing the Stewardship and Sustainability Guide for U.S. Dairy, which will help dairy farms and businesses measure and communicate about their progress in environmental, social and economic sustainability.
The Guide is being developed through an extensive process: industry is working together with stakeholders to draft, test, pilot and refine the content. View the comprehensive Guide version 1.2.
The Guide and supporting handbooks help dairy producers and processors in their efforts to voluntarily:
- Communicate about sustainability
- Demonstrate progress where it matters most
- Create long-term economic growth
- Build consumer trust
This in turn supports a growing number of buyers of milk and dairy products that are interested in this information to understand the sustainability performance of their supply chains.
The indicators in the Guide are based on the Innovation Center’s lifecycle assessment studies and practical input from the industry members and other experts including NGOs, government organizations, customers and academics. They can be used by dairy farmers and dairy processors in conjunction with Innovation Center tools like Farm SmartTM, Plant SmartTM and Fleet SmartTM, to track their progress over time and to identify areas for efficiencies and opportunities.
Additional resource are available for dairy farms, cooperatives and processors: View the Handbook to the Guide for Producers and the Handbook to the Guide for Processors.
