Winner selection

Nominations for the U.S. Dairy Sustainability Awards are evaluated in three specific areas by a panel of objective judges. Dairy farms and operations of all sizes are considered. Learn more about how winners are selected and who judges the nominations.

Selection criteria

Applications will be evaluated in these areas:

  • Results: specific and measurable results against sustainability objectives, which may address, for example:
    • Environmental: 
      • Water conservation and quality
      • Materials
      • Greenhouse gas emissions
      • Waste management
      • Energy management
    • Economic: 
      • Profitability
      • Productivity
      • Impact on local economy
    • Social: 
      • Food safety and quality
      • Employee working conditions
      • Community relations and activities
      • Health and nutrition
    • Learning, innovation and improvement, which may address, for example:
      • Building or improving on an existing practice for a better outcome
      • Sharing lessons learned with others
    • Potential for adoption by other dairy farms or businesses, which may address, for example:
      • Relevance to other dairy operations
      • Scalability
      • Plans to support the successful continuation/expansion of the practice(s)
      • Sharing best practices with others


An independent panel of judges evaluates all nominations based on measurable results and the potential for other dairy farms and businesses to adopt the practices. Nominations are also evaluated for demonstrated learning, innovation and improvement as well as scalability. Judges for 2017 will be announced soon.
