Breakfast is called the most important meal of the day for good reason – and science can back it up.

Studies have shown that eating breakfast not only provides students the nutrients they need, but it also has a positive effect on their cognition all morning. This can mean the world to students who need to stay alert throughout the school day.

In fact, breakfast can be a great source of five key nutrients. These include calcium, magnesium and potassium, which can be found in low-fat and fat-free dairy products, as well as vitamin E and fiber, which can be found in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. While that may seem like a tall order for breakfast, even simple breakfasts like milk and cereal or a fruit and yogurt smoothie can meet these needs.

Starting the day with breakfast can also lead to healthy habits at school. Students who eat breakfast – no matter if they enjoy it at home or in the classroom – are less tardy, less likely to visit the nurse’s office and absent less often.

Plus, the benefits of breakfast can be seen in the classroom, too. Students who eat breakfast have higher math and verbal fluency scores and perform better on standardized tests. They can better pay attention and behave better in class, too.
