Sustainability

U.S. dairy has a strong track record of taking care of animals, air, land and water, and is a leader in agricultural stewardship efforts.

The dairy community is dedicated to meeting the challenges of a world where we all are focused on addressing climate change and ensuring access to nutrient-rich foods that promote public health.

The U.S. dairy community is proud of its long-standing values of responsible production, nourishing communities and continuous improvement. As part of its contribution to feeding a growing global population in a sustainable way, the U.S. dairy community launched a voluntary industry-wide sustainability initiative through the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy.  Founded by dairy farmers in 2008, the Innovation Center brings leadership from across the dairy value chain together to align on social responsibility priorities, drive progress and speak with one voice.

In 2018, the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy convened leadership from across the industry to establish the U.S. Dairy Stewardship Commitment to document and demonstrate collective social responsibility progress in important areas like animal care, environmental stewardship, product quality and safety, workforce development and community contributions.

As part of its collective commitment to provide the world responsibly produced dairy foods that nourish people, strengthen communities and foster a sustainable future, dairy has set aggressive new environmental sustainability goals to achieve carbon neutrality or better, optimize water usage and improve water quality by 2050.

Social Responsibility

Through the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy, the dairy community supports socially responsible, economically viable and environmentally sound dairy food systems and share a commitment to work collectively for the future health and well-being of people, communities, cows and planet.
