If you’re looking for an easy way to be green and save some green, this DIY watering can project is just for you.

The best part about this super simple hack is that you can customize each watering can so it’s just what you need. For example, if you have a few houseplants or seedlings that you want to water, you can go with a half-gallon with a few fine holes in the lid. If you have larger houseplants or a large window box to water, you can use a gallon jug with larger lid holes.

Here’s a look at how you can make your own DIY watering can in just a matter of minutes.

Step 1: Gather everything you’ll need, including:

  • One clean plastic milk jug of any size
  • One needle (Tip: A large safety pin works well, but if you’d like to have a finer spray, choose a smaller needle.)
  • Matches or a lighter

Tip: A lighter may work better, since you have to reheat the needle often.

Step 2: Remove the plastic cap from the bottle. Pick up your needle or safety pin, and heat the tip for a few seconds.

Step 3: Pierce the milk bottle lid with the hot needle. You may have to reheat the needle after each puncture or two. Make a few holes to start; you can always go back and add more holes if you feel the spray is too fine.

Step 4: Fill the milk jug with water, screw the lid back on, and give it a try!
